The Westlake Demons managed just one run against Avon in their Division I sectional championship game with Avon.
Thanks to freshman pitcher Katie Lew, the one run proved to be enough.
Lew blanked the visiting Eagles, and her teammates made a second-inning run stand in a 1-0 victory. With the win, the fourth-seeded Demons advanced to next week’s district tournament at North Ridgeville.
Westlake scored what proved to be the game-winner when Erin Brown reached safely on a bunt single. The speedster stole second and scored on an Avon overthrow, one of two Eagle errors on the day. Meanwhile, Lew was scattering seven hits while striking out seven more Eagles in her seven innings of work.
The Demons will now take on Elyria, a 4-0 winner over Olmsted Falls. That game will be played at North Ridgeville High School at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. In the nightcap, top-seeded and state-ranked Avon Lake will face North Ridgeville in the other district semifinal.
The Shoregals claimed a sectional title with a narrow 4-3 win over Midview, while the Rangers also claimed a 4-3 win against Amherst. The winner of Tuesday’s games will play Wednesday, May 22, for the district championship.
The North Ridgeville District winner will advance to the Clyde Regional, where they will take on the winner of the Parma District. That game will be played at Clyde High School on May 30 at 5 p.m.
In Parma District action, Lakewood won its opener with a 14-inning marathon win over John Marshall, 5-4. The Rangers went extra innings in the sectional finals against North Royalton, but bowed out of the tournament in a 5-0 loss in 10 innings.
In Division II, Rocky River rallied late for a 10-9 win over Padua in the opening round. The Pirates, however, saw their post season come to an end with an 8-4 loss to Keystone in a sectional title game.
Bay lost its tournament opener, 7-2, to Buckeye.
