Thanks to a late-game rally, the Avon Eagles have returned to the Division II Region 4 championship game.
Quarterback Tommy Glenn found Zack Torbert for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 5:11 left in the game as Avon topped Perrysburg, 24-21, Friday night at Huron Memorial Stadium. The win kept the Eagles unbeaten on the season at 12-0 and sends them to the third round of the OHSAA playoffs.
Avon, the second seed in the region, will now take on the No. 1 team, Medina Highland, this coming Friday night for the right to play in the state final four. The Hornets, also 12-0, advanced to the regional title game with a hard-fought 17-14 win over Massillon.
Despite hold a 17-7 halftime lead, the Eagles had to fight for their playoff lives when Perrysbug scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Eagles, who hadn't scored since late in the second quarter, went on a six-play, 64-yard drive that was capped off by the Glenn-to-Torbert scoring strike.
Glenn got the Eagles on the board first with a 54-yard run early in the first quarter. Eric Sumislawski's 33-yard field goal made it 10-0, Avon, with 9:48 left in the first half.
Perrysburg got not he board in the second quarter when backup quarterback Trevor Hafner hit Seth Durham on a 17-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles answered as quarterback Jake Sopko came of the bench and found Braeden Friss on a 37-yard scoring play for that 17-7 halftime lead.
But in the fourth quarter, one of Glenn's four interceptions went to the Yellow Jackets' Nick Fleming, who returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. A 7-yard touchdown pass from Hafner to Nathan Patterson with 7:53 left in the game put Perrysburg on top.
