The Rocky River Pirates made a little bit of hockey history Monday morning at the Hamilton Ice Arena.
The Pirates won their fourth straight West Shore Conference Tournament championship with an 8-1 win over Avon in the title game. It was also the final conference championship with the disbanding of the WSC upon the conclusion of the 2014-15 school year.
Cam Heider's shorthanded goal with 4:44 left in the second period broke open a tight 1-1 contest. Goals by River Whitnable and Jack Mallett followed soon there after to propel the Pirates to the WSC crown as well as their fifth win of the weekend.
Rocky River, now 17-9 on the season, also participated in the Cleveland Jesuit Classic held at the Kent State Ice Arena. The Pirates went 3-1, including a 4-3 overtime win over Walsh Jesuit. A 5-2 loss to Padua knocked River out of that tournament's title game.
The Pirates reached the WSC title game with an 11-0 win over Bay.
