Wrestling: Journey to state begins with sectionals
The 2013 high school wrestling postseason gets underway this weekend with the OHSAA sectional wrestling tournaments.
Avon, Avon Lake, Lakewood, North Olmsted and Westlake will be competing in the Division I tournament at Lorain starting Friday at 5 p.m. The action will continue Saturday at 10 a.m.
In Division II, Bay and Rocky River will hit the mats at Medina, with the action starting Friday at 6 p.m. and resuming Saturday at 10 a.m.
Last weekend, the North Ridgeville Rangers rallied to win the West Shore Conference championship. They scored 163.5 points to edge out Avon’s 159.5 and Bay’s 156.5.

Eagles rally late to nip Rockets in key WSC match
If Thursday night was any indication, the battle for wrestling supremacy in the West Shore Conference is going to go down to the wire.
Avon, the defending WSC tournament champion, won five of the last six matches of the night to defeat up-and-coming Bay, 33-31, to help send the regular season race into a 3-way tie with two duals remaining.

Video: Rocket wrestling team off to a strong start
Don’t look now, but the Bay wrestling program has gotten off to one of its best starts in recent memory.
The Rockets opened with a strong second-place finish at the always-tough Knights of Columbus Invitational at Avon Lake. Vince Zitiello won an individual championship at 106 for Bay, which finished behind Amherst in the team standings.

The Westlake wrestling team hosted Southwestern Conference foe North Olmsted, along with North Ridgevile and Norwalk, last Saturday in non-conference action. The Eagles split their two matches, defeating North Ridgeville, 44-24, but getting edged out by the Truckers, 39-31.
