Eagles rally twice in late innings to edge Demons
The North Olmsted Eagles have been involved in a number of close games so far in 2013. So when they found themselves trailing visiting Westlake 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning they were in familiar territory.
“We’ve been on the field against some pretty good teams so far this season,” said North Olmsted head coach Tim Murphy. “In our five losses, we’ve been either tied or had the lead in the middle of the game.
“I don’t think we’re ever out of a game,” he added.
The persistence of Murphy’s Eagles paid off against the Demons. They rallied not once, but twice in the late innings Monday afternoon to claim a 2-1 Southwestern Conference win in nine innings at Victory Park. North Olmsted moved to 6-5 on the season and evened their SWC slate...

Threes power Avon's Eagles past North Olmsted
While the Avon Eagles have been pretty efficient shooting the ball this season, they haven’t necessarily been known for being a prolific 3-point shooting team.
After Tuesday night’s display at North Olmsted, that’s just one more thing the Eagles’ opponents have to worry about in coming weeks.
Avon nailed 10 3-pointers, including a torrid six in a row, and got some stellar play from its bench bunch as well to get a dominating 70-43 win over North Olmsted’s Eagles in non-conference play. All 13 Avon players scored on a night where it seemed the visitors could do no wrong.
“Everyone got a chance to play tonight,” said Avon head coach Kevin Sapara, whose team moved to 10-6 overall.
“It was a great team win. We didn’t let up when we got the lead, and then we were able to extend it...

Demons overcome slow start to dominate Eagles
With 5:30 left in the first half, the North Olmsted Eagles had visiting Westlake Demons right where they wanted them.
On a well-executed give-and-go play, Jason Brent took a pass from Sean Needles, then hit him cutting down the lane for a layup. With the score 16-16, the Orange and Black looked like they might have a shot at breaking their Southwestern Conference winless streak.
That outlook changed drastically over the next 5:26.
After a chat with head coach Shawn Hood durning a timeout, the Demons went on a 15-3 run to close out the half. The onslaught continued in the third quarter as the Demons left town with a convincing 64-34 win Friday night.
“We needed to play with high energy. We needed to play with hunger,” said Hood, whose team was coming off a tough 61-58 loss to Berea...

Eagles start new year with win over Rhodes, 63-45
Progress.
After taking over the North Olmsted girls program in 2010, Cheryl Bansek feels the tide may be starting to turn for the Eagles in season three of her program rebuild. They got off to a good start to the 2013 portion of their season Wednesday night with a convincing 63-45 win over Cleveland Rhodes in non-conference action.
“We’re ahead of where we were last year at this point,” said Bansek, whose team moved above the .500 mark at 6-5. “And we’re pleased with our progress.
“This is year three for me taking over the program and putting our system in. I think it’s starting to take hold and show on the court in the way we play. Our full-court pressure and intensity have really improved. We have athleticism, and we have speed.
“And we have a lot of length, a lot of height. That makes us a bit different from other teams...

Fast start gets Amherst past North Olmsted icers
Chalk it up as a lesson learned.
The North Olmsted hockey team picked a bad time to get off to a slow start as two-time Baron Cup II champion Amherst paid a visit Saturday afternoon. The Comets took advantage and scored three goals in the first period alone, coming away with a 5-2 win in a GCHSHL game at the North Olmsted Recreation Complex.
With the win, Amherst remained atop the White West Division with a 3-0 record. The Eagles fell to 1-1 in the division and 3-2 overall despite playing the Comets...

Video: Big second quarter pushes Bay past Eagles
Bay traveled to North Olmsted to open the 2012-13 high school basketball season Friday night and returned home with a 65-39 win.
The Eagles held a slim 13-11 led after one quarter, but the Rockets outscored them 19-5 in the second quarter to turn the tables and take a 30-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. Craig Linder led Bay with 18 points, while Scott Rapps and Ben Chase chipped in with 13 and 8 points, respectively.
North Olmsted was led by Sean Needles, who poured in 14 points. He was the only Eagle to score in double figures, however, as William Lucien was next in the scoring column with 8 points.
Larry was at the game and captured the action with his photos and video:

CHAMPIONS! Demons clip Eagles for district title
Baseball may be considered the game of inches, but on Saturday afternoon in the Division I girls soccer district final at Avon, the Westlake Demons won a match of inches.
In a contest featuring several missed opportunities and close calls, Westlake cashed in on a goal from junior midfielder Megan Konrad to post a 1-0 win over its Southwestern Conference rival North Olmsted.
The victory improved the Demons to 11-6-1 on the season and secured their spot in Tuesday night’s Rocky River Division I regional semifinal against Medina. The Bees punched their ticket with a 3-2 win over Copley in overtime. North Olmsted, which defeated top seeded Magnificat to get to the district final, closed out its season with a 5-10-4 mark.
“It’s been quite an up and down season for us,” said Westlake coach Scott Jones. “We have...

CHAMPIONS! Shoregals sweep Eagles to win SWC
Last season, the Avon Lake volleyball team went out in search of the program’s first Southwestern Conference championship since 1995. When the 2012 season rolled around, the Shoregals quickly realized their role in the league had dramatically changed.
They went from being the hunters to the hunted.
But despite a season-opening loss at Brecksville, the Shoregals answered that challenge. They capped off a 13-league match win streak Thursday night with a 24-14, 25-19, 25-16 win at North Olmsted to clinch the outright SWC crown for the second year in a row.
“We had to work a lot harder for it this year,” admitted senior middle hitter Chistine Bohan, who registered 13 kills to lead the Avon Lake offense.
“I feel we turned out to be a better team than last year,” Bohan said. “Even though our record in the conference is the same...

Early goal allows Magnificat to sneak past Eagles
There seems to be something about a Magnificat soccer uniform that brings out the best in the North Olmsted squad.
Last year, the Eagles ended the Blue Streaks’ season in the Division I tournament with a 1-0 win in double overtime. Saturday afternoon at North Olmsted Stadium, the Eagles gave the visitors all they could handle, with Magnificat getting out of town with a narrow 1-0 win.
The Blue Streaks, who were coming off their first loss of the season...

Rodriguez kicks Eagles past Westlake in overtime
With time expiring in regulation and the crowd on the edge of their collective seats, Tommy Rodriguez’s 25-yard field goal attempt sailed just wide of the right upright.
Not to worry. The North Olmsted senior didn’t have to wait long for his shot at redemption.
With the game moving into overtime, the Eagles’ defense stopped visiting Westlake on four straight plays. North Olmsted took over, and Rodriguez ended the game on a 22-yard field goal to give the Eagles an 18-15 win over the previously...

Thompson's goal allows Demons to salvage 1-1 tie
With just over 73 minutes played, North Olmsted was clinging to a 1-0 lead over arch-rival Westlake.
But the Demons, looking to hold on to first place in the Southwestern Conference, had just enough sense of urgency to make one last run.
With 6:50 left in the game, Dakota Swisher sent the ball to Adam Thompson on the left side. From just inside 25 yards, he launched a shot that found the inside of the far post. That allowed visiting Westlake to salvage a 1-1 tie and remain in the SWC race with two games remaining. North Olmsted, which got a goal...

Shoremen rally, grind out a win at North Olmsted
With North Olmsted holding a 13-7 halftime lead, Avon Lake head coach Dave Dlugosz had seen enough.
Penalties. Fumbled snaps. Interceptions. It was a trend that continued into the third quarter when a holding call stopped one drive and a David Winkel interception, his second of the game, stopped another.
On their third possession of the second half, the Shoremen went back to what they traditionally do best: Run the football...

Eagle spikers recover for SWC win over Demons
Trailing Westlake one set to none, the North Olmsted volleyball team knew it had some adjustments to make to get back into Tuesday night’s Southwestern Conference match.
Those adjustments were made, and the results soon followed.
North Olmsted, behind the one-two punch of outside hitters Tia McCord and Dana Borsz, cleaned up it’s game and went on a roll. The Eagles won the next three sets for a solid 23-25, 25-14, 25 16, 25-15 win over the Demons that kept them in the thick of the SWC race.
“We told our kids after the first game that they just needed to stay aggressive,” said Eagles head coach Jason Krucek, whose team...

SWC Wrapup: Eagles lasso Rangers, move to 3-0
During the first two weeks of the season, North Olmsted’s defense has been a dominating force in wins over Valley Forge and Lakewood.
Friday night against North Ridgeville, the Eagles’ offense got its final tuneup before the start of the Southwestern Conference season.
Head coach Mike Ptacek liked what he saw.
Mike Starcovic ran for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while quarterback Brad Novak...

Defense does the damage as Eagles top Rangers
If Mike Ptacek was pleased with his defense after last week’s win over Valley Forge, he had to be ecstatic over what he witnessed Friday night at Lakewood Stadium.
The North Olmsted head coach was all smiles after his Eagles came up big defensively and blanked Lakewood, 31-0, to begin the 2012 season at 2-0.
The combination of some big-play defense and an opportunistic offense had the visitors in control of the game from the start. The hometown Rangers, after scoring 51 points in their opener against Lincoln West, probably wondered what would go wrong next in falling to 1-1 on the season.
“I felt coming into this season that we would have...

A new era begins for River in 6-2 win over Eagles
While most teams had already played a game during the season’s opening week, the Rocky River girls team waited.
And waited.
Impatiently.
The Pirates, coming off the program’s best season ever in 2011, finally got out of the starting gate this past Saturday night. They scored four goals in the first half and fought off a determined rally by host North Olmsted in the second half to come away with a 6-2 win to start off the 2012 campaign. “Being the first game of the season, I’m always...

SWC Wrapup: Eagle defense holds down Patriots
During the preseason, North Olmsted football coach Mike Ptacek said his team’s success in 2012 would start on the defensive side of the ball.
The Eagles made sure that happened in their Friday night opener with Valley Forge. The visiting Patriots, who led 3-0 early on in the second quarter, managed just 121 total yards of offense on the night in a 21-10 loss to North Olmsted.
North Olmsted’s defense put the first points of the season on the scoreboard when James Ahern intercepted a Forge pass and raced 70 yards for the touchdown. Tommy Rodriguez kicked the extra point, and it was 7-3, Eagles.
Forge regained the lead briefly...

"Predictable' Eagles toppled by Tigers in opener
After going through just its third losing season in program history, the North Olmsted boys soccer team was looking to get the 2012 season off on the right foot.
Monday night’s season home opener, however, fell well short of the end result the Eagles had in mind.
Twinsburg, a perennial power on the east side, made its long trip to the Westshore worthwhile with a convincing 5-0- win over North Olmsted. The Tigers scored three goals in the first half in a 10-minute span to take control early in their season opener. “We were very predictable when we had the ball,” said North Olmsted head coach Chris Marsh...

Eagles returning skill, experience for 2012 season
After a 1-3 start to the season, North Olmsted bounced back to close out the season 4-2 and finish in the top half of the always-rugged Southwestern Conference.
In fact, one could argue the Eagles were just a handful of plays away from running the table and finishing 7-3. A 13-10 loss to Brecksville and a 21-14 loss to Olmsted Falls late in the game had the Orange and Black settling for a 5-5 campaign.
As the 2012 season draws nearer, Eagles veteran head coach Mike Ptacek welcomes back 36 lettermen from that team. He feels a combination of skill, experience and character will allow his team to take the next step...

DI: Young Rangers advance with win over Eagles
In 2011, the Lakewood baseball team won just four games. And with underclassmen dominating the lineup this season, the outlook for 2012 might have seemed bleak at first.
Don’t look now, but after 26 games the young Rangers are playing for a spot in the Division I district tournament.
Lakewood, up 5-1 after four innings, made some key defensive plays and scored an insurance run in the sixth inning for a 6-4 win over North Olmsted in a sectional semifinal. Thursday afternoon, the Rangers will take on third seed Westlake for a sectional title and a shot at next week’s district tournament. “These games are important...

Softball: Amherst edges Bees, claims SWC again
With one game left in the Southwestern Conference fastpitch softball season, the race is officially over.
On Thursday, Amherst won its second-straight title with a narrow 2-1 win over second-place Brecksville. At Westlake, the Demons had their championship dreams dashed in a crushing 14-3 defeat at the hands of Midpark.
Avon Lake, which fell out of contention last week, got a four-hitter from pitcher Annie Wennerberg as the Shoregals topped North Olmsted, 8-0. Amherst, now 11-2 in the SWC, scored two runs...

Wennerberg's one-hitter edges Banchek, Eagles
It became evident early on that Wednesday’s Southwestern Conference fastpitch matchup between Avon Lake and North Olmsted would turn into a pitchers duel.
From the first inning on, Shoregal junior Annie Wennerberg and Eagles senior Katie Banchek matched each other pitch for pitch. But while Banchek was solid, Wennerberg was nearly untouchable.
Wennerberg allowed an infield hit in the first inning and shut down the North Olmsted offense the rest of the way in a 2-0 win at Clifford Grady Field. A pair of unrearned runs proved to be enough support to up her record to 7-2 and keep the Shoregals...

Westlake's Neumann silences North Olmsted bats
For the better part of the game, Thursday’s Southwestern Conference baseball matchup between Westlake and North Olmsted was a pitchers’ duel. Seniors Dan Doyle of the Eagles and Ben Neumann of the Demons matched each other pitch for pitch, making base runners hard to come by.
Both pitchers were on their game. Neumann was just a bit better.
Neumann threw a gem, blanking the potent Eagle offense on six hits to lead Westlake to a 4-0 win at North Olmsted Park. The win got the Demons back to even at 2-2 in the SWC and tied them with the Eagles in the league standings behind front runners Amherst, Avon Lake and Brecksville.
The lanky righty went the distance, striking out six and walking just two in moving to 2-1 on the season.
“He’s been consistent for us so far this season...

Rodriguez, Eagles topple Bay for opening day win
It was a tale of two teams Wednesday afternoon at sun-drenched and breezy All Pro Freight Stadium.
Bay and North Olmsted took the field for one of several early-season high school games scheduled for the Avon park. When it was all said and done, the Eagles showed the poise of a veteran squad, while the Rockets paid for some youthful mistakes.
North Olmsted, behind the four-hit pitching of Tom Rodriguez, won its season opener, 9-1, and sent the Rockets to their second loss in as many days.
The Eagles scored four runs on just one hit in the top of the second inning to give them all the runs they needed. A five-run outburst in the top of the fourth all but put the game away. That was more than enough support for Rodriguez...

Video: Loss in OT brings Eagles' season to an end
Despite a strong fourth-quarter rally, the 2011-12 season came to an end for North Olmsted.
Strongsville, thanks in part to 11 3-pointers on the night, defeated the Eagles, 62-58, in overtime Monday night in the opening game of the Division I boys sectional/district tournament at Midview. With the loss, North Olmsted finished its season at 8-13.
The Mustangs hit a pair of treys early and took a 21-16 first quarter lead. After three quarters, they held a 42-34 advantage and led by as many as 10 points in the fourth. But the Eagles dug down defensively and rallied to take the lead, 50-49, with 2:22 left in regulation.
North Olmsted, however, failed to convert on three straight defensive stops. Strongsville split...

DI Girls: 3-point barrage helps Streaks top Eagles
For at least one day, Magnificat’s nickname should have been changed from Blue Streaks to Blue Bombers.
No team would agree more than North Olmsted.
The top-seeded Blue Streaks hit the Eagles with a barrage of 3-pointers to build an early lead and cruise to a 59-26 win Saturday afternoon in a Division I sectional tournament final at the Elyria Catholic Coliseum. Magnificat hit nine treys in the game, with four of them coming in the first quarter.
Magnificat, now 17-4, advances to this week’s district semifinals. The Blue Streaks will take on Avon Lake, a 51-49 winner over fourth-seeded Avon...

Avon bounces back with win over North Olmsted
After getting knocked out of the West Shore Conference race on Friday, Avon head coach Jim Baker had a challenge for his Eagles squad Tuesday night.
“We talked about character. I mean really, nobody’s going to feel sorry for us,” said Baker, whose team was coming off a tough 54-51 loss at Bay that was settled on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Eagles accepted the challenge, regrouped and came away with a 63-59 home court win over North Olmsted’s Eagles in a non-conference game.
“This was huge. This was absolutely huge,” Baker said after the game...

Depth pays dividends for Demons against Eagles
Throughout the season, Westlake head coach Shawn Hood has consistently used a 10-man rotation. No matter what the score, no matter who has the hot shooting hand that night, the non-stop march to the scorer’s table has remained the norm.
The result coming into the week? A 14-1 overall record and sole possession of first place in the Southwestern Conference.
Hood’s philosophy paid some additional dividends Tuesday night. With two starters out of action, the Demons still had enough...

Eagles looking for consistency after weekend split
After a Saturday afternoon loss to White Division East leader Solon, North Olmsted head coach Tim Murphy summed up his team’s performance.

“We’ve got to put together more consistent play...

Hockey: Despite loss, Demons continue to grow
So far, the 2011-12 hockey season has been one to remember for the fledging Westlake program.

Awaiting them was defending Baron Cup II champion Amherst...

Fourth-quarter run pushes Westlake past Eagles
For the better part of three quarters, North Olmsted and Westlake battled each other on even terms in a key early-season Southwestern Conference hoops matchup.

Westlake remains unbeaten with win over Eagles
For the better part of the first half, North Olmsted and Westlake looked like mirror images of each other. Both teams were pressing and pushing the ball up the floor at a frantic pace, but not doing much at the offensive end of the floor.

Second half outbursts propel Eagles past Rockets
In the first half, Friday night’s boys basketball season opener between Bay and North Olmsted looked like it would be a defensive struggle.
That all changed in the second half.
North Olmsted, nursing a slim 21-18 halftime lead, used scoring runs of 12-4 and 13-4 in the second half to come away with a 52-47 win to spoil the Rockets’ home opener.

Third-quarter rally gets Falls past North Olmsted
Throughout the first half and well into the third quarter, North Olmsted was having its way with arch rival Olmsted Falls.
A 47-second span later in the third changed all that.
That’s when Bulldogs quarterback Brennan Laird took advantage of an Eagle fumble and threw touchdown passes to Brendan Wall and Eric Meehan. The rally turned a 14-7 deficit into a 21-14 win at North Olmsted’s Mud Bowl that closed out the 2011 regular season.

Goal line fumble gives Eagles OT win over Demons
Was it a fumble, or wasn’t it?
For a moment, nobody on the field seemed to know for sure. But when the officials finally ruled that North Olmsted had recovered the ball in the end zone, all the Eagles knew was that they were leaving Westlake with a crazy, hard-fought 21-14 overtime win Friday night.
“We needed that one,” said North Olmsted head coach Mike Ptacek with a smile as his Eagles broke a three-game losing streak and climbed back into the Southwestern Conference race...

Bass, Shoremen run over North Olmsted, 45-23
North Olmsted showed signs of improvement Friday night in its first trip to Avon Lake’s renovated Memorial Stadium.

Football: Eagles open SWC slate with Shoremen
With the non-conference schedule out of the way, the Southwestern Conference race begins Friday night.

Westlake will host Amherst (1-2) at Lou Duchez Field, while Berea will host Brecksville (1-2). Each of the other four schools are 1-2 as well, with Olmsted Falls hosting Midpark and North Olmsted traveling to Avon Lake.
