DI: Young Rangers advance with win over Eagles|
May 10, 2012 - In 2011, the Lakewood baseball team won just four games. And with underclassmen dominating the lineup this season, the outlook for 2012 might have seemed bleak at first.
Don’t look now, but after 26 games the young Rangers are playing for a spot in the Division I district tournament.
Lakewood, up 5-1 after four innings, made some key defensive plays and scored an insurance run in the sixth inning for a 6-4 win over North Olmsted in a sectional semifinal. Thursday afternoon, the Rangers will take on third seed Westlake for a sectional title and a shot at next week’s district tournament. “These games are important...
Softball: Amherst edges Bees, claims SWC again|
May 04, 2012 - With one game left in the Southwestern Conference fastpitch softball season, the race is officially over.
On Thursday, Amherst won its second-straight title with a narrow 2-1 win over second-place Brecksville. At Westlake, the Demons had their championship dreams dashed in a crushing 14-3 defeat at the hands of Midpark.
Avon Lake, which fell out of contention last week, got a four-hitter from pitcher Annie Wennerberg as the Shoregals topped North Olmsted, 8-0. Amherst, now 11-2 in the SWC, scored two runs...
Wennerberg's one-hitter edges Banchek, Eagles|
Apr 19, 2012 - It became evident early on that Wednesday’s Southwestern Conference fastpitch matchup between Avon Lake and North Olmsted would turn into a pitchers duel.
From the first inning on, Shoregal junior Annie Wennerberg and Eagles senior Katie Banchek matched each other pitch for pitch. But while Banchek was solid, Wennerberg was nearly untouchable.
Wennerberg allowed an infield hit in the first inning and shut down the North Olmsted offense the rest of the way in a 2-0 win at Clifford Grady Field. A pair of unrearned runs proved to be enough support to up her record to 7-2 and keep the Shoregals...
Westlake's Neumann silences North Olmsted bats|
Apr 13, 2012 - For the better part of the game, Thursday’s Southwestern Conference baseball matchup between Westlake and North Olmsted was a pitchers’ duel. Seniors Dan Doyle of the Eagles and Ben Neumann of the Demons matched each other pitch for pitch, making base runners hard to come by.
Both pitchers were on their game. Neumann was just a bit better.
Neumann threw a gem, blanking the potent Eagle offense on six hits to lead Westlake to a 4-0 win at North Olmsted Park. The win got the Demons back to even at 2-2 in the SWC and tied them with the Eagles in the league standings behind front runners Amherst, Avon Lake and Brecksville.
The lanky righty went the distance, striking out six and walking just two in moving to 2-1 on the season.
“He’s been consistent for us so far this season...
Rodriguez, Eagles topple Bay for opening day win|
Mar 30, 2012 - It was a tale of two teams Wednesday afternoon at sun-drenched and breezy All Pro Freight Stadium.
Bay and North Olmsted took the field for one of several early-season high school games scheduled for the Avon park. When it was all said and done, the Eagles showed the poise of a veteran squad, while the Rockets paid for some youthful mistakes.
North Olmsted, behind the four-hit pitching of Tom Rodriguez, won its season opener, 9-1, and sent the Rockets to their second loss in as many days.
The Eagles scored four runs on just one hit in the top of the second inning to give them all the runs they needed. A five-run outburst in the top of the fourth all but put the game away. That was more than enough support for Rodriguez...
Video: Loss in OT brings Eagles' season to an end|
Feb 28, 2012 - Despite a strong fourth-quarter rally, the 2011-12 season came to an end for North Olmsted.
Strongsville, thanks in part to 11 3-pointers on the night, defeated the Eagles, 62-58, in overtime Monday night in the opening game of the Division I boys sectional/district tournament at Midview. With the loss, North Olmsted finished its season at 8-13.
The Mustangs hit a pair of treys early and took a 21-16 first quarter lead. After three quarters, they held a 42-34 advantage and led by as many as 10 points in the fourth. But the Eagles dug down defensively and rallied to take the lead, 50-49, with 2:22 left in regulation.
North Olmsted, however, failed to convert on three straight defensive stops. Strongsville split...
DI Girls: 3-point barrage helps Streaks top Eagles|
Feb 27, 2012 - For at least one day, Magnificat’s nickname should have been changed from Blue Streaks to Blue Bombers.
No team would agree more than North Olmsted.
The top-seeded Blue Streaks hit the Eagles with a barrage of 3-pointers to build an early lead and cruise to a 59-26 win Saturday afternoon in a Division I sectional tournament final at the Elyria Catholic Coliseum. Magnificat hit nine treys in the game, with four of them coming in the first quarter.
Magnificat, now 17-4, advances to this week’s district semifinals. The Blue Streaks will take on Avon Lake, a 51-49 winner over fourth-seeded Avon...
Avon bounces back with win over North Olmsted|
Feb 15, 2012 - After getting knocked out of the West Shore Conference race on Friday, Avon head coach Jim Baker had a challenge for his Eagles squad Tuesday night.
“We talked about character. I mean really, nobody’s going to feel sorry for us,” said Baker, whose team was coming off a tough 54-51 loss at Bay that was settled on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Eagles accepted the challenge, regrouped and came away with a 63-59 home court win over North Olmsted’s Eagles in a non-conference game.
“This was huge. This was absolutely huge,” Baker said after the game...
Depth pays dividends for Demons against Eagles|
Feb 08, 2012 - Throughout the season, Westlake head coach Shawn Hood has consistently used a 10-man rotation. No matter what the score, no matter who has the hot shooting hand that night, the non-stop march to the scorer’s table has remained the norm.
The result coming into the week? A 14-1 overall record and sole possession of first place in the Southwestern Conference.
Hood’s philosophy paid some additional dividends Tuesday night. With two starters out of action, the Demons still had enough...

Eagles looking for consistency after weekend split|
Jan 24, 2012 - After a Saturday afternoon loss to White Division East leader Solon, North Olmsted head coach Tim Murphy summed up his team’s performance.
“We’re really not consistent,” Murphy said after a 4-2 loss to the Comets on the North Olmsted Recreation Complex ice. “We never really got going. We had some things that got us out of rhythm.
“We’ve got to put together more consistent play...
Hockey: Despite loss, Demons continue to grow|
Jan 20, 2012 - So far, the 2011-12 hockey season has been one to remember for the fledging Westlake program.
The Demons, in just their second year of existence, take a record of 18-5-1 into Saturday night’s game with Avon. Last weekend, they went 3-0 in pool play at the Southwestern Conference Tournament and advanced to Monday afternoon’s title game.
Awaiting them was defending Baron Cup II champion Amherst...

Fourth-quarter run pushes Westlake past Eagles|
Jan 07, 2012 - For the better part of three quarters, North Olmsted and Westlake battled each other on even terms in a key early-season Southwestern Conference hoops matchup.
As the third quarter ended, however, the game would change dramatically.
That’s when point guard Ezzat Assad’s long-range 3-pointer to beat the buzzer pushed the Demons’ lead to 45-35. That shot ignited a 12-4 Westlake run...

Westlake remains unbeaten with win over Eagles|
Dec 18, 2011 - For the better part of the first half, North Olmsted and Westlake looked like mirror images of each other. Both teams were pressing and pushing the ball up the floor at a frantic pace, but not doing much at the offensive end of the floor.
The song remained the same in the second half except for one thing:
The Demons found their scoring touch...

Second half outbursts propel Eagles past Rockets|
Dec 03, 2011 - In the first half, Friday night’s boys basketball season opener between Bay and North Olmsted looked like it would be a defensive struggle.
That all changed in the second half.
North Olmsted, nursing a slim 21-18 halftime lead, used scoring runs of 12-4 and 13-4 in the second half to come away with a 52-47 win to spoil the Rockets’ home opener.
“It’s early in the year, and right now the defenses are ahead of the offenses...
Third-quarter rally gets Falls past North Olmsted|
Oct 29, 2011 - Throughout the first half and well into the third quarter, North Olmsted was having its way with arch rival Olmsted Falls.
A 47-second span later in the third changed all that.
That’s when Bulldogs quarterback Brennan Laird took advantage of an Eagle fumble and threw touchdown passes to Brendan Wall and Eric Meehan. The rally turned a 14-7 deficit into a 21-14 win at North Olmsted’s Mud Bowl that closed out the 2011 regular season.
Olmsted Falls finished the regular season...
Football: Eagles top Comets for third straight win|

North Olmsted’s rushing game proved too much for the Comets to handle...

The win evened the Eagles’ overall record at 4-4 and raised their SWC mark to 3-2. A 21-point outburst in the third quarter...
Westlake fights back to take Eagles in five sets|
Oct 05, 2011 - In the first set of Tuesday night’s volleyball match at Westlake, North Olmsted made enough mistakes to last an entire match in dropping a 25-19 decision.
The Eagles battled back, taking a 2-1 lead on Volley For The Cure Night. But with a chance to close things out in the fourth set, those mistakes crept back into the picture.
The Demons were all but happy to take advantage...
River's Bierut wins going away at Fleet Feet Invite|

None of that mattered to Elyse Bierut.
The Rocky River senior dominated the course, beating the next closest runner by just under 16 seconds to win the 2011 Fleet Feet Strongsville Invitational last Saturday.
Goal line fumble gives Eagles OT win over Demons|
Sep 24, 2011 - Was it a fumble, or wasn’t it?
For a moment, nobody on the field seemed to know for sure. But when the officials finally ruled that North Olmsted had recovered the ball in the end zone, all the Eagles knew was that they were leaving Westlake with a crazy, hard-fought 21-14 overtime win Friday night.
“We needed that one,” said North Olmsted head coach Mike Ptacek with a smile as his Eagles broke a three-game losing streak and climbed back into the Southwestern Conference race...
Bass, Shoremen run over North Olmsted, 45-23|
Sep 17, 2011 - North Olmsted showed signs of improvement Friday night in its first trip to Avon Lake’s renovated Memorial Stadium.
The Eagles just couldn’t stop the Shoremen’s running attack.

Sep 16, 2011 - With the non-conference schedule out of the way, the Southwestern Conference race begins Friday night.

Westlake will host Amherst (1-2) at Lou Duchez Field, while Berea will host Brecksville (1-2). Each of the other four schools are 1-2 as well, with Olmsted Falls hosting Midpark and North Olmsted traveling to Avon Lake.

The Rangers, behind the outside hitting of Elizabeth Spellacy and Danielle Witri, nipped the Pirates in the semifinals and advanced to the championship match.
