Defense, Tjotjos goals send River to state lax final|
May 31, 2012 - With the final minute of the game ticking off the scoreboard clock, all Rocky River head coach Steve Anderson could do was watch.
His Pirates were leading University School, 8-7, in the Division II state lacrosse semifinals. An illegal procedure call had given the Preppers the ball moments earlier, and now it was up to the River defense to get the job done.
“Come on defense. Come on...,” Anderson said to himself as goalie Aaron Blossey and the River defense deflected a USchool shot with 24 seconds left with the Preppers a man up. Then with 10 seconds left, the Pirates recovered a fumbled ball and sent it flying down field...
River lax returns to Elite Eight with win over Bay|
May 24, 2012 - Through one quarter of play, the Bay boys lacrosse team was holding its own against Rocky River. The Rockets’ defense was holding as the Pirates held a slim 2-0 lead after the first 12 minutes.
But with River already having a 14-3 shot advantage, the bottom fell out quickly for Bay.
The Pirates, the number one team in the Division II Northwest Division, scored five unassisted goals in the second quarter and advanced to the Elite Eight with a 14-4 win Wednesday night. Rocky River has now advanced...
River tennis program claims another WSC crown|

Bay, which won the...
DII Baseball: Late Falcons rally ends River dream|
May 21, 2012 - As losses go, this one was a tough one for the Rocky River baseball team to stomach.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning last Thursday in a Division II district baseball semifinal against Firelands. But six Falcons came to plate in that fateful final frame.
The first three made it home as Firelands rallied for a 3-2 stunner at The Pipe Yard in Lorain.
The loss ended the Pirates’ shot at advancing to the Division II regionals. Firelands had its...
Last-minute goal rallies 'Riders past Rocky River|
Apr 25, 2012 - In the midst of its toughest stretch of games so far this season, Rocky River head coach Steve Anderson knew his Pirates would be facing a number of challenges.
After an exhilarating 7-6 win Saturday afternoon at St. Edward, Anderson’s Pirates had faced the first challenge head on and came out on top. Tuesday night, an early 4-1 deficit against visiting Kent Roosevelt had River in unfamiliar territory.
Even more challenges lied ahead...
PR Watch: Bierut, River girls get off to strong start|
Apr 24, 2012 - It has been a solid start to the 2012 track and field season for the Rocky River girls squad.
The Pirates have faced tough competition the past two weeks, running in the Miele Invitational and the Comet Relays. They finished third in the Miele behind Medina and Chardon, then took fourth at Amherst behind Brunswick, Medina and Mentor.
At Miele, River senior Elyse Beirut set a new meet record in the 3200 with her time of 10:51.57. That eclipsed the old time of 10:59.38 set by Magnificat’s Abby Fischer...
Rebuild? Tone set as River boys lacrosse reloads|
Apr 20, 2012 - For some programs, losing a large senior class can mean a rebuilding program is right around the corner.
That doesn’t seem to be the case this season for the Rocky River boys lacrosse team.
The Pirates, who advanced to the Division II Final Four last season, are off to a solid 6-1 start under third-year head coach Steve Anderson. This week, they knocked off Avon Lake, 13-2, and began preparing for a challenging stretch of games over the next week. On Saturday afternoon...
Video: Pirates edge Rockets, 5-4, in WSC rematch|
Apr 20, 2012 - Last Thursday, Rocky River scored four runs in the first three innings and won its West Shore Conference rematch with Bay, 5-4. But after one time through the league season, the big question in WSC baseball this spring is this:
Can anybody beat Avon?
The Eagles are still unbeaten in 2012. They reside all alone in first place after last week’s 1-0 win over Midview, and have taken their overall record to 15-0 after a Saturday doubleheader sweep, 4-2 and 10-2, over Avon Lake.
Weather permitting, Avon will host North Ridgeville on Monday as teams resume...
Good start helps Lakewood top River, get to .500|

That evened their record at 7-7 heading into Wednesday’s Northeast Ohio Conference encounter with Elyria. Rocky River fell to 1-8...

Avon scored seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back in a convincing 12-1 win at Rocky River. The Eagles remained undefeated on the season at 9-0 and ran their WSC record to...

Pirates rally in WSC opener, Rockets still winless|
Apr 06, 2012 - All signs pointed to Bay getting its first baseball win of the young 2012 season.
The Rockets’ bats came alive Wednesday in the bottom of the second inning, turning a walk, two doubles and a triple into three runs against Rocky River ace Justin Seffernick. In the meantime, Bay junior Jake Peters was blanking the Pirates in his first start of the season.
But the game changed drastically in the top of the seventh when the Pirates rallied for four runs. Bay recovered with a run in the bottom of the frame, but River came right back ...

DII boys: Pirates stop Bay, aim to tame Bengals|
Mar 10, 2012 - With both teams playing intense defense, Thursday’s Division II district semifinal between Bay and Rocky River seemed to have the makings of an instant classic.
But just like the previous two meetings this season, the Pirates’ offense provided fans with a rerun.
Despite getting held to just two points in the second quarter, Rocky River maintained its early lead and ran away in the third quarter for a 50-34 win over the Rockets. The defending champions used a 16-7 third quarter to advance to Saturday night’s title game with top-seeded Benedictine...

Longtime rivals Bay and Rocky River will meet for the third time this season, this time in a boys Division II district semifinal game at 7 p.m. The winner will move on to the district championship game Saturday night and play for a spot in the state’s Sweet 16.
Last Saturday, both teams dominated their opponents to win sectional tournament titles.
Bay, despite not having Bryan Lowrie, jumped all over third-seeded Brookside early and rolled to a 64-35 win. In the nightcap, the defending district champion Pirates built a 15-point halftime lead and eliminated Padua, 59-48.
The Rockets took the court without Lowrie, who suffered a concussion during their tournament opener...
DII Girls: Defense powers Pirates on to Sweet 16|
Mar 04, 2012 - Throughout the regular season and into tournament play, Rocky River head coach Mike Sislowski dropped some not-so-subtle hints about the importance of his team’s defense.
If folks weren’t catching the clues, Saturday’s district championship game with Keystone provided everybody with an eye-opening revelation.
The Pirates, bound and determined to return to the Sweet 16, suffocated the top-seeded Wildcats with a defensive performance for the ages. They held Keystone to seven baskets for the game, leaving Elyria High...
DII Girls: River tops Bay, to face Keystone in final|
Mar 02, 2012 - The Rocky River girls basketball team is on a mission.
The Pirates completed another stage of that mission Thursday night at Elyria High. Behind a dominating defense and a strong performance from Ciara Kessler, they manhandled Bay, 44-19, to advance to Saturday’s Division II district championship game.
At 1 p.m. that day, they’ll take on defending Elyria district champion Keystone, which needed two overtimes to defeat Holy Name, 44-42, in Thursday night’s second game. The winner will move on to the Sweet 16 and a regional semifinal in Barberton next Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

DII girls: Third quarter run helps Pirates advance|
Feb 24, 2012 - Zone defense slowing you down? Shots rolling around the rim and out? Lose one of your top scorers with an injury?
No problem at all for the Rocky River girls basketball team.
The second-seeded Pirates brushed all that aside in Thursday night’s Division II sectional final with Buckeye. River went on a torrid 16-0 run in the third quarter and left Elyria High with a 50-24 win over the Bucks.
River, now 15-7, will face West Shore Conference foe Bay next Thursday night at Elyria in the district semifinals. The winner of that game will play for the district championship and a berth in the Sweet 16...
DII Girls: River shakes off rust, deals Cards a loss|
Feb 21, 2012 - It had been eight days since Rocky River played in a basketball game that counted. The effects of that layoff showed early on in the Pirates’ opening round DII tournament game with Brookside.
It didn’t take long, however, for the tournament’s second-seeded team to shake off the rust and get down to work.
River, with its defense forcing 28 turnovers, got the job done Monday night with a 48-23 win over Brookside at Elyria High School’s new gymnasium. The win puts the Pirates in a Thursday night sectional title game against Buckeye.
“We felt like pressure defense was our ticket to success today,” said River head coach Mike Sislowski, whose team moved to 14-7...

Baron Cup: Second period run gets US past River|
Feb 10, 2012 - The moment University School killed off a Rocky River power play, the tide started to turn in Thursday night’s Baron Cup quarterfinal.
Senior Kevin DeGulis, who had just served a two-minute penalty for roughing, saw his opportunity as soon as he hit the ice. With the puck right in front of him, he beat the River defense to the punch and got off a shot to the left of Pirates goalie Jake Nicholson.
Nicholson stopped the shot taken from the circle, but the puck bounced right to the oncoming Tyler Dalton...

Just like that, the momentum took a turn.
The visiting Pirates went on a run of their own. As the final moments of the quarter ticked off, River junior Ryan McCrone...

With the partisan Pirate crowd already whipped into a frenzy, the decibel level rose even higher when River eventually tied the game to send it into overtime. And with a 52-49 lead early on in OT, the momentum was clearly in the Pirates’ favor.
The Demons, however, had other ideas...

Pirates fight off Explorers to regain tourney crown|
Nov 29, 2011 - Last year, Hudson came into Hamilton Ice Arena and won Rocky River ‘s annual Thanksgiving Tournament championship. Monday night, the Explorers hit the ice determined to repeat.
An equally determined band of Pirates would have nothing to do with that scenario.
A big save from goalie Jake Nicholson on a penalty shot and a breakaway goal by Tyler Harkins with 3.8 seconds left in the second period set the tone. The ensuing three-goal outburst in the third period sealed the deal...
Bierut, Connelly cap off successful season at state|
Nov 09, 2011 - As the 2011 cross country season progressed, Rocky River head coach Laura Brabant liked what she saw of her two top runners, Elyse Bierut and Madi Connelly.
The River duo battled through their first year of Division I competition, as well as less-than-perfect course and weather conditions. Despite those obstacles, it was not uncommon to see Bierut leading the pack, with Connelly close behind.
They both advanced to the OHSAA State Cross Country Championships last Saturday...

CHAMPIONS! River edges Bay to win WSC crown|
Oct 13, 2011 - The battle between Bay and Rocky River for the West Shore Conference girls soccer championship was not for the faint of heart. The action was non-stop, and the intensity was palpable.
In fact, without the sport’s 80-minute time restraint, the two teams might still be going hard at each other today on the Memorial Stadium pitch.
But with the score tied at 2-2 and just 5:28 remaining, Rocky River took advantage of a golden opportunity. That’s when...

Football: Pirates scourge Sailors; Demons hold on|
Sep 17, 2011 - So far this season, Rocky River’s defense has, more often than not, delivered big plays when they’ve been needed. Offensively, running back Andreas Tjotjos has been the Pirates’ go-to guy.
None of that changed Friday night.
The Pirate D stayed the course in Vermilion, holding the Sailors to under 200 yards in total offense in a 14-6 win to open West Shore Conference play. Meanwhile, Tjotjos had another monster game...
