Westshore athletes advance at Amherst DI district

May 25, 2013 - The West Shore Conference track and field champions made their presence felt at the Amherst Division I Track and Field Championships. The Bay girls and the Avon boys each qualified in seven events Friday at Richard S. Cooley track. They advanced to this week’s regional meet at Amherst, as did several other Westshore-area athletes. Host Amherst won the girls district title with 89 points, edging out Medina’s 88. Brunswick was third with 64 points, followed by Lorain with 59, Bay at 55 and Rocky River at 46.50. Lew's pitching, Brown's speed advance Westlake

May 16, 2013 - The Westlake Demons managed just one run against Avon in their Division I sectional championship game with Avon. Thanks to freshman pitcher Katie Lew, the one run proved to be enough. Lew blanked the visiting Eagles, and her teammates made a second-inning run stand in a 1-0 victory. With the win, the fourth-seeded Demons advanced to next week’s district tournament at North Ridgeville. Westlake scored what proved to be the game-winner when Erin Brown...    (2446 reads)

Magnificat overwhelms Avon, reaches district final

Feb 28, 2013 - For the first four minutes of the game, Avon was right where it wanted to be against top-seeded Magnificat. But from that point on, it must have seemed like a tidal wave of navy blue was washing away the Eagles’ district title hopes. Down 8-6, Magnificat quickly showed why it was the favorite to repeat as district champions. The Blue Streaks, bolstered by the hot shooting hand of Sarah Scelza, went on a dominating 30-5 run to close out the first half and buried Avon, 58-29, in a Division I semifinal game Wednesday night at Elyria Catholic’s Coliseum. Magnificat will now face Elyria, which defeated Amherst 45-32 in Wednesday night’s first semifinal contest. Tipoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Coliseum. Avon, which closed out its season at 14-9, saw things go south in a hurry as the combination of turnovers and Scelza’s shooting proved to be too much to overcome...    (2917 reads)

Eagles rally late to turn away Shoregals' upset bid

Feb 24, 2013 - A quick look in the scorebook showed that Jessica Yurkovich scored a mere three points in Saturday’s Division I tournament game with Avon Lake. Those may be the biggest three points of her young varsity career. The Avon sophomore scored those three crucial points in the game’s final 50 seconds to help her team get past the upset-minded Shoregals, 45-41, in a sectional final game at the Elyria Catholic Coliseum. The Eagles, now 14-9, avoided what would have been their second-straight tournament loss to Avon Lake in the sectional finals. Avon will now play in next Wednesday’s district semifinals against No. 1 Magnificat, a 74-34 winner over North Olmsted in Saturday’s other sectional title game. “We knew coming into today’s game...    (2720 reads)

CHAMPIONS! Avon tops Midview for share of WSC

Feb 23, 2013 - With just under a minute left and Avon clinging to a 2-point lead, it was still anybody’s ballgame. As the packed house reached a fever pitch, Eagle guard Brian Kelly found himself getting trapped in the backcourt against the Midview press. But as he looked up, there was Zack Torbert... All alone. Kelly fired the long pass to his sophomore teammate, who made the wide-open layup in front of the frenzied Eagles Nest. That bucket, along with some clutch free throws...    (2234 reads)

Threes power Avon's Eagles past North Olmsted

Feb 13, 2013 - While the Avon Eagles have been pretty efficient shooting the ball this season, they haven’t necessarily been known for being a prolific 3-point shooting team. After Tuesday night’s display at North Olmsted, that’s just one more thing the Eagles’ opponents have to worry about in coming weeks. Avon nailed 10 3-pointers, including a torrid six in a row, and got some stellar play from its bench bunch as well to get a dominating 70-43 win over North Olmsted’s Eagles in non-conference play. All 13 Avon players scored on a night where it seemed the visitors could do no wrong. “Everyone got a chance to play tonight,” said Avon head coach Kevin Sapara, whose team moved to 10-6 overall. “It was a great team win. We didn’t let up when we got the lead, and then we were able to extend it...    (3086 reads)

Race for WSC crown tightens as Eagles get by EC

Jan 27, 2013 - With 2:20 left in the fourth quarter, it was anybody’s ballgame. For the first 29:40, Avon and Elyria Catholic had battled on even terms. Panther senior Brittney McNamara had just tied the game at 46-all with a long-range 3-pointer from the left wing. Neither team looked like it was willing to budge an inch. With just under two minutes left, Avon’s Sierra Davidson scored inside with what proved to be the game-winning bucket. But it wasn’t until Alexandra Bjorn rebounded a missed EC shot from point-blank range in the final seconds that the Eagles were able to secure the hard-fought 48-46 win in a West Shore Conference Saturday matinee thriller...    (2312 reads)

Eagles rally late to nip Rockets in key WSC match

Jan 18, 2013 - If Thursday night was any indication, the battle for wrestling supremacy in the West Shore Conference is going to go down to the wire. Avon, the defending WSC tournament champion, won five of the last six matches of the night to defeat up-and-coming Bay, 33-31, to help send the regular season race into a 3-way tie with two duals remaining. Down the Road at Rocky River, the Pirates were having their say in the race. Their 37-34 win over previously unbeaten North Ridgeville dropped the Rangers into a tie with...    (3100 reads)

Eagles take advantage of Pirates' offensive woes

Dec 19, 2012 - With 5:34 left in the second quarter, Rocky River post player Tom McNamara got the ball inside and scored. That fact alone wasn’t the big news. The fact that it was the Pirates’ first basket of the game was. In the previous first 10:25 of the game, a Ricky Bremkamp free throw was all River was able to put on the scoreboard. Avon, despite some offensive challenges of its own, took full advantage and came away with a 36-28 West Shore Conference win Tuesday night. “I was as puzzled as anybody,” admitted Pirates head coach Michael Murray, whose team...    (2459 reads)

Irish onslaught brings an end to Avon playoff run

Avon’s defense followed up with a six-play stop, further steering the momentum in the Eagles’ favor. At that point, nobody on either sideline...    (2693 reads)

Video: Maloney, defense shine as Eagles advance

Nov 10, 2012 - Avon, sparked by the defensive play of Kevin Maloney, advanced to the OHSAA Division II Region 6 championship game with a 24-14 win over No. 1 Tiffin Columbian Friday night in Fremont. Maloney had a hand in four turnovers, three of which led directly to the Eagles’ three touchdowns on the night. His first-half interception resulted in quarterback David Zeh’s 9-yard touchdown run that pushed Avon’s lead to 10-0. Later in the second quarter, Maloney recovered a fumble that led to Ross Douglas’ 8-yard scoring...    (2447 reads)

Give me five: Douglas' TD outburst thwarts Pirates

Oct 20, 2012 - With 11:12 left and the game hanging in the balance, Rocky River’s Keelan Boettcher ran a quarterback sneak from two yards out. Xhuljo Harunaj nailed the conversion kick, and the Pirates were all tied up at 21-all with West Shore Conference leader Avon. What happened next could be summed up in two words: Ross Douglas. The University of Michigan recruit, who had already scored three...    (3296 reads)

Westlake passes first tournament test, tops Eagles

Oct 18, 2012 - Last season in the Division I district title game, Avon came to Read Field and stunned a veteran Westlake squad with a 1-0 win over the Demons. Wednesday night, two of the Demons’ more youthful players made sure history didn’t repeat itself. Freshman Maya Bauer scored a first-half goal and sophomore Missy Murthy scored in the 58th minute to push Westlake past the visiting Eagles, 2-1, in a Rocky River Division I sectional title game. The win moved the Southwestern Conference co-champions to 9-6-1 and into next week’s...    (3210 reads)

Panthers sweep Avon, maintain hold on WSC lead

Sep 26, 2012 - After playing great volleyball over the past few weeks, the youthful Avon squad was looking forward to it’s match at Elyria Catholic Tuesday night. The Panthers, unbeaten in the West Shore Conference, were ranked fifth in the lastest Division III coaches poll but just one match ahead of the Eagles in the standings. It was an opportunity for Avon to make a statement that their young team had arrived. Instead, the Eagles left Elyria knowing they had more work to do. The Panthers held off a furious rally to win the second set, then jumped out to a big lead in the third set to sweep the Eagles 25-15, 25-23, 25-15 at the EC Coliseum. The win gave...    (2579 reads)

Brown's goal keeps Rockets on pace in the WSC

Sep 20, 2012 - Bay’s Alex Brown knew that her team needed to “get their mojo back,” so she took matters into her own hands. Scoring at the 35:23 mark of the second half on a perfect pass from teammate Eva Rezek, Brown not only got the Rockets’ mojo back, but helped Bay to a 1-0 win over visiting Avon in West Shore Conference play Wednesday night. With the win, the Rockets improved to 4-0 in the conference and 8-1-1 on the season. Eagles take control early in 3-set sweep at River

Sep 05, 2012 - After a big win last week at Midview, Rocky River head coach Kelly Bennett was looking for more of the same Tuesday night as Avon paid a visit. As it turned out, the Eagles had other ideas. Avon took advantage of numerous Pirate mistakes in the first set and left town with a three-set sweep in handing River its first loss of the season. The 25-13, 25-17, 25-22 Eagle win put both teams at 2-1 in the West Shore Conference, one game behind front-running Lakewood and Elyria Catholic. “Our offense has really picked up a lot,” said Avon head coach Jenn Larrick...    (3183 reads)

They Eagles, now 1-1, held the Dukes to 100 yards of total offense for the game and scored the only touchdown they needed late in the first quarter. That’s when quarterback David Zeh found Bevins with an 11-yard scoring strike. Wellington’s defense played well early on, and had some momentum going when it forced...    (2275 reads)
